7 marketing trends for 2022 & beyond

I recently listened to hosts Neil & Eric discuss 7 Marketing Trends for 2022 & Beyond on their podcast Marketing School. For those of you who want to know more about digital and online marketing, I highly recommend checking out their 10 minute daily episodes – they are quick, digestible and highly informative.

This episode particularly captivated me because it touched on some new and emerging technology while recognizing some of the platforms that many of us are already using and loving in our lives. Here are my thoughts on the 7 trends they’ve forecasted for next year.

Trend 1: “NFTs as a Marketing Strategy”

Non fungible tokens, or NFTs, have boomed over the last few years. If, like me, you require a good explanation of what an NFT actually is, check out this video from the Wall Street Journal on YouTube that does a great job of explaining. Basically, they’re unique digital assets that hold value, existing as a “blockchain” that stores information like who owns it now and who has owned it in the past. As we have watched other cryptocurrencies, most notably BitCoin, become increasingly popular and bring wealth to many, we can expect to see NFTs become more mainstream in 2022.

Trend 2: “People Using Tools as a Form of Marketing”

I must agree with Neil & Eric on this one. As a current student, many of the websites I visit as part of my program offer free tools, like templates or calculators, which in turn drives me to visit their website more often. This generates more website traffic for them as many people find value in these free tools, decreases the need for more content creation, and ends up giving the website more authority!

Trend 3: “DAOs”

Another acronym. DAO stands for Decentralized Autonomous Organizations. Again, if you want a great explanation, head over to this YouTube video from Luno that does a great job explaining it in simple terms. A DAO is an organization that operates transparently, or autonomously, without the intervention of humans – it’s created by humans but runs on programmed code. This is appealing to many as you can imagine since it eliminates the “middlemen” and is something we can expect to see more of in 2022. If you want to know more, check out this article from Forbes that relates DAOs back to the aforementioned NFTs.

Trend 4: “Voice Commerce”

Recently I was visiting a friend and we wanted to watch a movie - she spoke to her remote, and Netflix popped up on her TV. Now, my home personally is equipped with Google Home speakers all throughout it, but I still depend on pressing the buttons on my remote to watch the Office for the 100th time. Now imagine instead of asking your remote or your speaker to play your favourite TV show, you instead ask it to order your favourite food, or order more toilet paper from Amazon. 2022 is expected to change our relationship with voice commerce, an already multi billion-dollar industry, and many businesses will have to adapt to keep up.

Trend 5: “YouTube”

How many of you get ready in the morning with YouTube playing in the background, or spend your lunch time watching videos in your office? In this blog alone I’ve already recommended two YouTube videos for you to watch for learning. Need I say more about this one?

Trend 6: “Podcasts”

You would be hard pressed to find someone these days that hasn’t dipped their toes into the world of podcasts. Whether you want to hear about true crime, listen to your favourite actors interview your other favourite people, or meditate after a long day, there is something out there for everyone. There are only about 2 million or so podcasts out there and over a billion blogs, meaning this platform is only going to grow in the future. If you’ve been unsure about when to start your podcast, consider this a sign that NOW is the time.

Trend 7: “Twitter”

Perhaps the easiest way to interact with people you don’t know on the internet is with Twitter. According to Google there are currently 396 million active users on the platform, and this number is increasing by the minute. Engaging with your audience is as simple as sending a direct message, liking a tweet, or replying to tweets you have been mentioned in. Collaborating with others is as simple as adding a #hashtag to your tweet so you can join in on trending conversations. This “micro blogging” platform doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere, and it’s not too late to start now!
